TAI CHI
CLASSES IN WOLFVILLE,
Nova Scotia, Canada
The KINGS COUNTY TAI CHI ASSOCIATION has been holding classes year
round in Wolfville since February 1983 at the St. John's Parish Hall
on Main Street.
Style
Yang Style, as taught by the late Mr. Lee Shiu Pak of Montreal - a
traditional long form with upright posture and expansive movements
Instructor
Marilyn Manzer has been instructing in Wolfville since 1985. She has
studied since 1984 with Sam Slutsky of Montreal, who apprenticed with
Mr. Lee and regularly gives workshops in Wolfville. Prior to that she
studied the Taoist tai chi style with John Panter of Halifax, and prior
to that Mr. Lee's yang style with Margaret Ann Capper Galbraith, who
currently teaches in Sackville, N.B.
Classes
Classes are held on Thursday evenings at the St. John's Parish Hall
from 7:00 - 9:00 pm from September to May. In the summer they are usually
held elsewhere. This class is simultaneously for all levels and has
several advanced students who assist with instructing beginners. People
of any level can join the class at any time.
The classes begin with warm-up (or slow down) breathing and movement
exercises, followed by practicing tai chi walking through perfecting
"brush knee twists" and "step back and repulse the monkey". This is
followed by performing the tai chi exercise in a large group. Then the
group divides according to the stage of learning and we work in small
groups, finishing the evening by performing the first stage of the exercise
program all together. Halfway through the class we always stop for a
cup of mint tea and a bit of conversation.
The emphasis in the class is to learn the exercise form and to developing
correct posture, alignments and placements for the practice of tai chi.
